Chapter Twenty-Two: A Purpose

What exactly did he want? I haven’t really wondered that for a long time. I was chasing my true north, but I feel I’ve lost my way again.

“I don’t want revenge. I don’t want to retreat from the rest of the world either. I want… my time back. I want to fix what happened. I want to undo years of pain. But I can’t, and neither can you. Now, let me think.” Sven contemplated. He had a castle now— a whole castle, all to himself. How could he use it to make the world he wanted? What could he do?

He closed his eyes. Faces flashed into his mind. Ash, laughing and looking at him, always there for him. Lloyd, dour and grim faced, but always working. Rogdul, the orc recruit, brandishing an axe and surprising him with all the grit and discipline he possessed.. Xenox, the lizard man, leaning awkwardly against the wall of the Adventurer’s Rest. Valindra Olaberos, the young elf, learning magic under the table from Ash after her training was done. Spunky Zane who reminded Sven so much of himself. Krozeng, the goblin archer. Poor Montesquieu with his unhappy horse and a lifetime of living up to expectations.

They’d all come all this way to help him, even though the mission was dangerous. They deserved something for that. They deserve what I promised them. Training. A place to call home.

Not just them, either. His thoughts turned to the kids who’d hired him to guide them through the dungeons, hopeless as so many of them were. They had brought something to his life that he hadn’t had before. He thought fondly of young Margolyn, the flower girl, who just wanted to send her sister to school. Of the hydra who’d risked everything to help a friend in exchange for nothing but a bottle of honey wine. They were such good kids, and they worked hard. Even the ones who weren’t cut out for adventuring could probably succeed at something else.

His mood darkened when he thought of his old friends from years past. Basequin. Rabbit, the Dragon Prince. John Finley. Galen. And all the rest. The ones that he hadn’t been able to help. They deserved better than they’d gotten.

If he’d been around when Galen was a boy, maybe he wouldn’t have turned out like he did. He could have saved him.

Maybe if he’d run into somebody like the man he wanted to be when he was still young Thomas Riley, he would have made better decisions. Somebody that could be his own Sven the Shatterfist. Maybe if that had happened, he wouldn’t have lost so many people. Wouldn’t have ended up being killed by his so-called friends and spending years in some sort of limbo he didn't want to remember.

He knew he had to make up for what he’d done, even if he couldn’t remember specifically what it was. But that would have to come later. In time, he would repent, one way or another. For now, he had a decision to make.
